Protecting Privacy and Security
Chapter 10
There are 3 areas of security that we feel are especially vulnerable:
- Computers
- E-mail & Computer Viruses
- Threat Level: EXTREME
- We use Norton Antivirus 360 to scan all incoming and outgoing e-mails.
- Be sure to use the Live Update feature at least every week.
- Do a full system scan weekly.
- Program the system to do it automatically.
- Pay the yearly fee for updates (it’s worth it).
- Go ahead and use other antivirus software (McAfee, etc.) but use it often and keep it updated. Not all software works well with all operating systems.
- Computer Spyware
- Threat Level: HIGH
- We use Ad-aware to scan our systems weekly for ad and spyware.
- There are many other software options available.
- Earthlink hosting also offers many of the virus/spyware/pop-up tools in their services included.
- Computer Hackers
- Threat Level: MEDIUM
- Less of a threat in general - but still a threat you need protection from.
- We use Zone Alarm, McAfee and Windows-based built in firewall.
- Passwords should be changed regularly, be easy to remember - but hard to guess and have mixed letters and numbers.
- If you use a wireless router or wireless network, be sure to secure or encrypt your network to avoid having people use your connection. Just follow instructions that come with the hardware.
- Land line wireless office phones.
- People can use an electronic scanner - readily available - to listen to your phone calls made on any wireless phone.
- The lower frequencies, older & cheaper phones in the 900 mhz and under frequency ranges are especially vulnerable.
- The higher frequencies (2.5 Ghz-5.8 Ghz and up), newer, more expensive phones are more secure (until scanner technology catches up).
- Hard-wired standard land based telephone lines are most secure.
- When calling your bank, ordering over the phone or any other sensitive matter - use a hard-wired, non-wireless phone.
- Office Camera Systems.
- Available in all price ranges. $100 and up.
- Hard-wired, wireless, internet capable, etc.
- 900 Mhz - 2.5 Ghz wireless phones can interfere with wireless camera systems in the same frequency range. Be sure to know what frequency each operates on before purchasing the other.
- Internet capable cameras are becoming cheaper and more prevalent. They are great for monitoring your office or residence while away.
- Hard wired camera systems are most expensive (usually $1200 per camera and up, installed). They are great for extended time recording and time stamping.
- We have been using wireless cameras from X10 Systems for years and been very happy with their performance, covert size and flexibility. Now, we have installed some hard wired infra red outdoor cameras for monitoring day and night. It’s great to be able to catch someone who thinks they are getting away with something.
